What SEO and GEO can learn from revenue operations

Funnel definitions and stages, qualification models and scoring, and unit economics are most often used in revenue operations. But when SEO and GEO teams borrow them with shared definitions, they can make better decisions about what to measure and prioritize.

Both channels are commercial levers, so let’s explore why they should share principles with RevOps.
Visibility isn’t always commercial value

Traditional search is quite often measured in rankings, impressions, traffic, and share of voice. GEO has since introduced citations, mentions, and AI visibility. Share of voice (SOV) is common to both, as is commercial impact, even when incrementality and/or attribution can be complex.

The crux is that commercial impact should be the primary measure of value.

For instance, a page generating 10,000 organic visits may produce fewer qualified opportunities than one generating 500.

Think of a product page with a high conversion rate (CVR) versus an informational guide without any connection to movement of users across a buying journey.

For a real-world example, at a healthcare publication I worked on, we had a page targeting a keyword that was reported to have zero monthly search volume in the U.S.

It generated far fewer clicks than other content, but user intent and therefore its conversion rate performed so strongly that it resulted in more than $40,000 of annual revenue. That was nearly double the revenue of the next most valuable page.

The same idea applies to GEO, where being cited a lot is not inherently valuable if those citations never influence a commercially meaningful decision.

RevOps offers frameworks that help make those connections, and it starts by defining the movement that increased visibility is supposed to create.

Dig deeper: How to make your SEO strategy more commercially aware
Start with funnel definitions

RevOps teams have agreed definitions of how customers are created through funnel stages, from prospect to MQL to SQL to opportunity and eventually to closed-won or closed-lost.

Connect SEO or GEO touchpoints to the stages they can realistically influence.

An informational article may spark needed awareness to move users toward deeper product research, a high-intent comparison page may generate demo requests that sales can work on, a citation or brand mention might influence further consideration before a potential customer visits your site, or it may even be the deciding factor a month after the latest touchpoint.

SEO and GEO can be viewed through the lens of reverse-engineering a desired outcome, identifying which touchpoints should move users toward it, while also recognizing that not everything needs to perform immediately.
Measure CVR between stages

Traffic, mentions, and citation growth are visibility, but stage-to-stage CVR provides a clearer picture of quality, exposes snags, and informs what the best thing to do is.
